The city's liveliest area is Bandar Bazar, which is in the heart of town and is bustling until midnight. You'll find just about anything and everything here. Smuggling goods from India is widespread, and around this bazar products from India such as cosmetics, confectionery and saris are widely available. The city also has some modern shopping establishments, in particular the ultra-modern three-storey Sylhet Plaza on Zinda Bazar Rd and the Feroz Centre near the Chowhatta.

Sylhet has a variety of handicrafts, including chairs, baskets, handbags, trays and lampshades made from locally grown cane. Floor mats called 'sital patis' are a speciality, and the exquisite home-spun fabrics of the Monipuri make colourful souvenirs. The best selection of such handicrafts and textiles is available at the Aarong outlet on Jaintiapur Rd, just over a block east of Zinda Bazar Rd.
