Places to Stay
There are several near-identical lower-end hotels, all well-marked
establishments on the main drag, as well as two hotels with air-con
rooms. One place worth avoiding is the Hotel
Mukta, as we've received several letters about thefts from this
place.
Coming from Dhaka, the first hotel you'll pass is the Hotel Nilima,
a typical country hotel with singles/doubles for Tk 60/120 with
attached bathrooms, fan and mosquito net.
About 250m away on the other side of the road is the Hotel Taj Mahal,
a newish establishment with rooms for Tk 60/100. The rooms are small
and the beds are rather hard, but at least it's clean.
Hotel Plaza (t. 525), on College Rd, has room for private parking.
Ordinary singles/doubles cost Tk 100/150, while larger air-con rooms
are Tk 400/500. The hotel entrance is through a small shopping
centre.
The only mid-range establishment in town is the Hotel Sandhya (t.
243, 439), on the south side of the large concrete market building.
Furnished air-con rooms cost Tk 300/600 with comfortable beds and
decent bathrooms. Unfortunately the carpets tend to give off a musty odour that can't be dispelled by spraying sickly
sweet air freshener, as much as the staff may try. There are also
some cheaper single rooms that don't have air-con. They will cost
you between Tk 60 and Tk 200.
